Fri, 20 Jul 2007 The weather was just beautiful tonight, and I was restless - didn't want to stay around home. So I grabbed my little point-n-shoot digital camera and headed down to the lake. I went to the beach just west of where Euclid Creek enters Lake Erie. I got there just as the sun was beginning to set, and the light was getting good. There were a lot of seagulls and geese on the beach, but as I walked closer to them I saw a Great Blue Heron standing in front of the Cleveland skyline. Too far away to get a good portrait, but I was able to crop it to focus on the contrast between the dignified bird and the city buildings. (It is about 8 miles from downtown to the beach.) I tried to get closer to the heron but he soon decided he didn't like me and took off. So I hunkered down on the sand to let the gulls get used to my presence. I got a lot of mediocre shots of gulls standing around. Some aren't bad thanks to the evening light, but the lens just isn't long enough to get a good shot of one bird. But then some kids arrived, and spooked the birds. I got a bunch of shots as they flew around. Mostly blurry, but one nice one. One of the blurry shots I actually like quite a bit. As the light was dying and I was taking a few final shots of the gulls and geese, the heron came back, flying low and slow along the edge of the water. I snapped three quick shots, but only one came out. (posted: 20 Jul 2007 23:43) (permalink) |
